Square Pegs in Round Holes

Ozil is best in the middle so we play him out wide and play Cazorla, who is good out wide, in the centre.

Podolski can't play as a central striker, but we play him there and keep Alexis Sanchez, who can play up front, out wide.

We played the second half with all four fit defenders on the pitch. We were, and could quite easily be again, one injury away from Flamini playing in the back four. Flamini, who rarely plays a game without committing a cynical foul earning him a yellow card, playing out of position where he could be the last man/in the penalty area earning a red card and maybe a penalty.

There's one day left in the transfer window. We're clearly short of a striker and a centre back, and a defensive midfielder wouldn't hurt. It feels like the 2013 season all over again, except this time I'm not sure we'll win anything.

10 minutes and 10 men. Transfer window closes in under 1 day, and we have no fit defenders that aren't already on the pitch.

Obviously there's some kind of rule about how many Germans can play at the same time. Podolski on, so Ozil sits out the rest of the game.

Ubuntu LTS Upgrade Error
Friday 29th August, 2014 11:56
I upgraded a VM, which was originally built by someone else, from Ubuntu LTS 12.04 to 14.04. It turns out I hit the same annoying bug that many others have suffered from:
error: file not found
error: file not found
error: file not found

Press any key to continue...
At least it can be solved with a simple "sudo update-grub" once you're back in. I'm not sure if it's related to the VM being created in VMware and me running it in VirtualBox, but I can imagine this sort of issue could be a big problem for people maintaining lots of servers, especially if it's difficult to get console access to them. I guess there's still a gulf in class between Ubuntu LTS and a more mature long term distribution like RHEL/CentOS. I wouldn't want to run anything other than CentOS nowadays for a typical server.

9 injuries? Boo hoo. You lost 4-0 to MK Dons! Watch #Arsenal beat Besiktas tonight with our ridiculously thin squad. #COYG

New Season, Same Problems
Sunday 24th August, 2014 09:54
After Arsenal won the Community Shield against Man City I hoped we'd have a good start to the new season. Despite going a goal down (which I've seen far too many times) we pulled it back for an opening day win.

But since then it's been a couple of draws. Admittedly both were away matches against tough opposition (and several questionable decisions from the referees), but I feel like we should be doing better if we stand any chance of winning a major trophy again this year.

We're still short in the same positions: CB, DM and CF. I think Chambers and Sanchez have been fantastic signings, but having sold Vermaelen we need another experienced CB. Arteta's injury highlights how badly we need a better DM. Giroud's ankle problem this weekend means we're lacking a decent striker in our next match. Lose that (or draw and get knocked out on away goals) and we may struggle to bring in those world class players that we badly need.

Tactically some odd decisions have been made. We don't have a left winger and playing Ozil there punished us. I don't know if Podolski will still be with us next week, but he's not really a left winger either. Until we sign one I'd be happier playing a right winger there so we can keep Ozil central.

Probably related to our injury problems, but I think we need to play Ramsey and only play Wilshere if Ramsey is injured or needs a rest. Just like how we only really play Flamini if Arteta is out. They're too similar and I feel we only get the best out of them when they don't get in the way of each other.

One highlight has been the decent performances of Monreal since Gibbs picked up his injury. For a second choice left back he's doing pretty well. Which is a relief when we have no other fit left footed defenders.

A solid win midweek will be important for this season.

Should have been a penalty. Probably won't win the Emirates Cup now. Bad decision by the referee. #Arsenal
