Missed Call
Saturday 13th May, 2006 01:54 Comments: 1
I noticed the other day that I had a missed call from an odd looking number (08444823210). Well I just got around to doing a search for it with Google and came across this. I'm glad I didn't answer it/call back.

Hmm, looks like the link I gave no longer points to the right place. Anyway, if you split the number up in Google you get more results. One person even answered and posted their experience:

They called my Three mobile number. When answered it rings (clearly a computer doing the dialling). An Indian (or Pakistani or similar) woman answered saying she was from "Advanced Mobile Firm" and asked if I was with Vodafone.

Now, my number is ported from Vodafone, but as far as I know mobile numbers aren't listed, so I asked her where the company got my number from. She said from "public listing". When I told her my number wasn't listed she hung up.

So I called the number back to see who it was. It connects to a voicemail system. "Our office are now closed" says the voice, despite the fact that I'd been called only 2 or 3 minutes earlier. It then asks you to key in your phone number so an agent can call you back. Fat chance, matey!!

I've also just come across a post that said:

Turns out it's some scumbag mobile phone telemarketing company. They get you to pay for the cold call that they are making. Cheeky or what? I had a missed call from an 0207 number earlier in the day which I assume was their original unwanted cold call and the second 08444 number was their underhand way of following up.

I wonder if they were the ones that called me on the 0208 number the next day that I ignored. I think I'll stop answering the phone to anyone that isn't on my contact list at this rate, I even had Talk Talk cold call me on my new landline (using some kind of automated machine, I think, based on the wooden conversation - "how are you this evening sir" *pause for person to reply to the non-human on the line* *ask next automated question*)!
