I'm not really a dog person, especially little ones, but this story made me warm to them a little. A pet Chihuahua has saved a baby from a deadly rattlesnake. One-year-old Booker West was splashing his hands in a birdbath at his grandparents' home in Colorado when the rattlesnake slithered up to the infant. When the snake lunged at terrified Booker, brave Zoey the Chihuahua jumped between the rattlesnake and the baby, getting bitten in the process, allowing Booker to escape. Zoey was rushed to the vet in Masonville and is now back up and running around. Zoey's proud owner Denise Long said: "These little bitty dogs, they just don't really get credit"

Chihuahuas can be surprisingly aggressive. I didn't know they were that family orientated though. A well trained dog with a strong bond with the family will do an awful lot to protect it.

My stepdad used to have a female German Shepherd and she was great. There are stories of her fighting off rotweilers who came into a garden to do some mischief to my stepbrothers and once when I was walking her in the park (I was about 8 at the time) a strange bloke approached me, but backed off pretty quickly when she planted herself in front of me and showed him her teeth! Maybe peados smell funny?

I would rather a bigger dog than a teeny one it has to be said!
