Top 10 Standalone Sci-Fi Movies
Tuesday 3rd April, 2007 11:06 Comments: 4
SFX released their Top 10 Sci-Fi movies the other day, but only two of them were standalone movies. You could argue that's because they're not good enough to spawn a sequel, but I'd like to think that the movies are self contained and therefore don't and can't spawn a successful sequel (or prequel). The Matrix is probably a fine example of a fantastic standalone movie that was stretched into a rather dissapointing trilogy.

I haven't put much thought into it yet, but I have several movies in mind. So, what's your Top 10 Standalone Sci-Fi Movies?

Some quick and dirty suggestions:

2001: A Space Odyssey
28 Days Later
Being John Malkovich
Blade Runner
Children of Men
Donnie Darko
E.T.
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
eXistenZ
Fight Club
Gattaca
Independence Day
Minority Report
Serenity
The Fifth Element
The Truman Show
The War of the Worlds
Tron
Twelve Monkeys

Not sure all of those are science fiction, exactly...

All three of the Star Wars movies should probably be nominated at least - A New Hope because it was seminal (but not that good), Empire Strikes Back (because it's actually a really good film - and one of the best sequels ever made IMO), and Return of the Jedi (because although it's not as good as ESB, it rocks harder ;) )

Logan's Run
Planet of the Apes
The Forbidden Planet
THX 1138
Ghost in the Shell
Pitch Black

I should clarify my post above, as well: just because a movie's a sequel or has spawned one doesn't mean it can't be judged as a stand-alone movie, does it? I'd probably include the matrix as well. And reluctantly drop RotJ, probably.

You might be right on a few of those movies, then again I haven't seen all of the ones I've listed.

True, in which case I'd add The Matrix to the list as that was a nice self-contained movie. You could probably add Blade too. Unfortunately, some of the movies might be good because you already have background knowledge from previous ones, which is why it probably rules out most sequels. Then again, very few sequels are better than the original movies.

After a few minutes of careful thought, this is my Top 10:

The Matrix
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind
2001: A Space Odyssey
Serenity
Children of Men
Twelve Monkeys
Blade Runner
Gattaca
eXistenZ
Blade

Unless anyone else suggests something that I really should include instead.
