Windows 2000

I think Microsoft are going to encourage Windows 2000 users to upgrade through a cunning plan entitled "annoyance". Starting next year, Daylight Savings Time (in America) will move, and for those with Windows 2000 machines that time change won't be automatic because Window 2000 won't get a patch. Ever. Presumably because it's not a security issue.

Of course, there are a lot of third-party ntp programs that they could run instead...

It's not quite as easy though, as you'll have to configure the workstations and servers to use another server for NTP, and have an NTP server somewhere - presumably an XP or Windows 2003 host (or probably a Linux box). I almost wish they'd release a patch as it's such a small thing and yet it could make life a lot easier. Ah well, I don't have any 2000 hosts anymore, what do I care? Hehe.

Talking of DST pains in the arses... My phone can automagically change time as I move between time zones, why the hell can't it do ntp-type goodness through the timestamps over GSM?
